My suggestion is that if you are not comfortable with liquid, you should apply pencil and then apply the liquid on the pencil. This works better for me.

I apply pencil and then apply liquid on top of it.
I'm guessing you're using it on your top lid. What I do to make it perfectly even is close your eye and put your finger at the corner of the outside of your lid and pull so your eyelid is tight, and then apply the liner with your other hand. Go slowly, and it's best to get a high magnification and lighted mirror so you can see the little details. Practice !! Good luck.
